Ego & Higher Self

What is the ego ? What is the Self or higher self ?

The simplest way of answering these questions is the ego is the incomplete and fragmented aspect of our being. That incompleteness manifests as desire, and so we seek externally hoping to find ever-lasting peace. We must recognize that fear, insecurity, anger and all other grim feelings are associated with the ego. When the ego does not get what it desires, we become uneasy, 'dis-ease' kicks in.

Also, ego dwells in a world of duality. Duality being the absence of unity, so we operate within a subject/object relationship, and we measure life in opposites. Today, we're either happy or sad, it was a good day or bad day, and naturally, there’s always this desire to drift towards the bright side of life. Life though, as we know, isn’t as bright as we’d like it to be. We usually have these grand expectations of what it should be like, ego projections, but then reality kicks in and we end up bummed out. This tension of opposites is where we spend most of our lives, and that’s the ego monkeying around. Expectations, and lack of presence, fuel the ego.

The Self or higher self on the other hand is the complete aspect of our being, a dimension where we seek nothing, we are whole as is, desire and fear have left the building. Peace is our natural state of being. We simply accept things as they are, and we go with the flow. The simple things in life, satisfy our souls. We simply be, and transcend the desire fueled 'becoming' mentality. This is doesn't lead to state of passivity by the way, what unfolds is actually quite the opposite.

So, at this stage, we're a mix of both ego and higher self, and most probably more on the ego side. A good idea would be to become conscious of the ego, soften it, and finally integrate the ego within the space of the higher self. The higher self is considered our essence or natural state by many traditions, and what is unnatural is the overactive mind.
